Staying Safe Around Heavy Machinery

When I started working with my Uncle Bob last summer, I assumed that construction would be an easy, fun way to make a few extra bucks. However, I quickly discovered that construction work was serious business, filled with risks, difficulty, and rewards. After almost being creamed by a few backhoe booms, I learned how to stay out of the way. However, staying safe around heavy machinery isn't always easy to do. My blog talks about how to use machinery properly and what you need to do to stay safe so that you can return home to your family each and every day.

4 Tips To Prevent Pallet Rack Collapses

Ashley Hayes

If you use pallet racks in your warehouse, then you probably rely on them for storage of all of your equipment and products. One thing that you might be concerned about is a pallet rack collapse; not only could this put your equipment and products at risk of being damaged, but it could also be dangerous for you and your employees. Luckily, there are a few things that you can do to help prevent these collapses from occurring in your warehouse.

1. Inspect Pallet Racks Regularly

First of all, you should make it a habit to inspect your pallet racks on a regular basis. Ensure that there is no problem with the structural integrity of your pallet racks by inspecting for damage, buckling or other signs of a potential collapse. Make sure that even small issues are taken care of as soon as possible. Even minor buckling or other small imperfections can cause a pallet rack to break and collapse, particularly when you have it filled with your products.

2. Abide by Weight Limits

Your pallet racking system should come with a weight limit. Make sure that you read the owner's manual to determine this weight limit, and do everything that you can to abide by this limit. If you need to store more equipment, you should invest in more pallet racks rather than attempting to over-stuff your existing ones.

3. Use the Right Loading Methods

It can be easy to get in a hurry when you are loading your equipment and stock onto your pallet racks. However, you shouldn't move too quickly. Make sure that you load your items evenly, so that there is not too much weight on one side or the other. Also, make sure that you do not accidentally bump into your pallet racks with your forklifts or other equipment. Even if it doesn't cause an automatic collapse, this could cause damage that could eventually cause your pallet racks to fail

4. Make Sure Your Pallet Racks Have Proper Support

You should make sure that your pallet racks are stored on a flat, hard surface with plenty of support, such as on your concrete floors. If necessary, consider bolting your racks to the wall to provide added support.

Pallet rack collapses should be avoided at all costs. They can cause all of your costly equipment and stock to be damaged, which can cost you a lot of money, or it can result in you or your employees getting hurt. Luckily, if you follow these tips, you should be able to prevent collapses from happening. For more information on warehouse handling, contact a company like Independent Lift Truck Of Alaska.
